Hire a wedding photographer who says YES | Editorial Wedding Photographer Scotland, UK | Heather McKay Photography

Let’s talk about something that should be non-negotiable when it comes to your wedding day: flexibility. When you hire your wedding photographer, you want someone who’s going to say yes to the things that make your day uniquely yours. A wedding is one of the most important days of your life, and it’s full of little moments and changes that don’t always fit into a rigid box. That’s why it’s crucial to find a photographer who understands that your plans might change and is willing to roll with it.

I have guidelines I've developed, as every business does, but the wonderful thing is - I've created them, so I can bend and break them. Rigid rules are for corporate office jobs, not for your wedding! If you're looking for a wedding photographer who will adapt to your needs and your ever changing wedding timeline, you're in the right place.

"Can you hold my date for me while I finalise my venue?"

YES.

Planning a wedding is a process — and we all know how stressful it can be to get every detail locked down. If you're still finalising your venue or waiting for that one last detail to fall into place, don’t stress about putting down a deposit with me. I get it. There’s a lot going on, and I don’t want you to commit to your photographer only to find out later that your venue's availability doesn't align. If you need me to reserve your date while you sort that out, I’m 100% on board. I’d rather you feel confident and excited about your choice than worried that you’re missing out on the photographer you love. So, I'll hold your date provisonally until you get it sorted. If anyone else enquires for your date in the meantime, I'll give you a shout so you get first dibs!

"Can you stay longer than we agreed?"

YES.

The timeline on paper is a guide, not a set-in-stone rulebook. Weddings evolve. Things run late. Sometimes the speeches take longer than anticipated, the meal is delayed, your band have technical difficulties, things happen on a wedding day that we can't control, but the important thing is that we run with them. If you need more time to capture your first dance, or to run upstairs and get those honeymoon suite flash shots you were so excited for, I'm all in. If you want me to stay later than we initially agreed — whether it’s for that last toast or for capturing a relaxed moment in the evening — you’ll hear me say one thing: YES. I’m here for the full experience, and I want to make sure we don’t miss anything that matters to you. You don’t have to worry about a clock ticking in the background while you’re trying to make memories.

"Can you travel between different venues to photograph our day?"

YES.

Whether you’re having a relaxed countryside wedding, a city celebration, a highlands adventure or multiple locations throughout the day, you want your photographer to be as excited about your journey as you are. Want me to travel to a remote castle or hop between two different venues to capture every single moment? Yes! You don’t need to worry about any extra charges or complicated logistics. If you’re bringing your vision to life in different places, I’m here to follow your lead and make sure every part of your day is documented in the way it deserves. I’ve photographed weddings from churches, to hotels, to the wild highland moors and always embrace the opportunity to get creative in new settings. After all, your wedding day isn’t bound by geography — and neither am I.

"Can we share our photos with other suppliers so they can share them too?"

YES.

I believe your wedding gallery isn’t just for you — it’s for everyone who played a part in making your day perfect. If you’ve worked with amazing suppliers who helped create your dream wedding, why not let them share the beautiful moments we’ve captured together? Whether it’s your florist, makeup artist, planner, or any other talented people who contributed to your big day, I’ll happily share your gallery with them so they can showcase the magic we created together. This isn’t about me getting recognition (although, hey, I’ll happily take it!). It’s about collaborating as a team. The best wedding days are the ones where everyone is working together to create something extraordinary — and I’m all about supporting that. The thing is, without all of your other suppliers your photographs wouldn't look the same, so let's help them share their incredible work!

"Do you have strict rules and restrictions?"

NO.

I’m not about rigid policies and rules. Sure, I have systems in place — because every business needs structure to stay organised and efficient. But when it comes to your wedding day, I’m here to make your life easier, not harder. You won’t get a list of inflexible policies that make you feel like you’re jumping through hoops to make me happy. If you need something, if you need a change, if you need an extra hand — I’m your photographer who says YES. Your wedding day is not a corporate meeting. It’s a celebration of you, of your love, and of the life you’re building together. My job is to make sure that every moment of that day is captured with care, joy, and flexibility — exactly the way you want it.

Why Flexibility Makes All the Difference

A wedding day can go from calm to chaotic in a heartbeat — and that’s okay. When things don’t go as planned, it’s how you react that makes all the difference. As your photographer, it’s my job to stay calm, stay creative, and stay flexible.

I’m not just here to take photos — I’m here to support you through the process, adapt to the changes, and make sure you have one less thing to worry about. I want you to feel like you can lean on me to make sure everything runs smoothly. When I say “yes” to your requests, it’s because I want you to enjoy your day without any added stress.

The Right People Around You Make All the Difference

At the end of the day, your wedding vendors should feel like a team — a team that’s in your corner, supporting you through every step of the day. That’s why I always say, surround yourself with the right people. You deserve vendors who are as excited about your big day as you are, who are happy to adapt, and who are fully invested in creating the best experience possible for you. And that’s exactly the kind of photographer I am.

So, when you’re choosing your wedding photographer, make sure they’re someone who will say YES to all the little things that matter most to you. Your wedding is all about you — and I’m here to help make it as perfect as it can be (even if “perfect” means embracing the beautiful chaos).
